Letters of Success

For the last two years I lived at Shepherd’s house. Before I got there my life had deteriorated and loomed out of control. I began drugs after my daughter succumbed to cancer. Within a year I progressively ventured off into the dark world of drugs. When I found myself in county jail again, I got down on my knees and I cried out to God pleading for His help. I was miraculously delivered, and I was placed into Shepherd’s House where I began to see God work on my life day by day. I am forever grateful to the staff and the camaraderie I found with other Veterans.

Shepherd’s House assisted me in so many ways. From supplying bus passes, clothing, food – just a beautiful home. I took advantage of the clinical programming and learned as much as I could I arrived homeless, hopeless and helpless. Today thanks to Shepherd House my life has meaning and purpose. Just before I exited the program, Shepherds house awarded my hard work by giving me the keys to a Chevy Impala. Free of charge! The staff told me that they saw something in me which I could not see myself. I am so grateful for the guidance, direction, stability and a new sense of self-worth!

My life before I found Shepherds House included war, abuse, prison, criminal activity, alcoholism and drug addiction. Throughout the nine months I resided at Shepherd’s House I experienced Jesus Christ working in many ways. This program, staff, and the other veterans, have helped me in countless ways. Before Shepherd’s House I had no coping skills to deal with my PTSD, anxiety and suicidal ideations. The staff inspired me to make goals for my future. I’ve been sober for over five years now, it’s only by the hand of God. If anyone out there needs help… there is Hope waiting for you at Shepherd’s House.

Three years ago, I found myself in jail. My attorney told me I would most likely spend 31 years in prison. I wasn’t sure if I would ever see the outside again. I didn’t want to live any longer. I found the Bible on my block and started reading. I believe God made it possible for me to be released from incarceration a few months ago. My primary goal now is glorifying God and everything I do. That is extremely motivating for me. I now work full time at the VA medical center, I still volunteer time to help other veterans at the Shepherd’s house.

I was an alcoholic and addicted to pain medication after I hurt my back. Since my problems began, I have received four DUI’s as was in three bad car accidents. I would wake up in the morning to do 4 or 5 shots of cheap vodka to get rid of my shakes. I moved into Shepherds House, and finally got help for my depression, anxiety and PTSD. Now I’m clean and sober 18 months. Now I sponsor and mentor many other veterans. Anyone struggling, reach out to Shepherds’ House and give the program your 110%.

I was spiritually bankrupt due to drugs and alcohol, and without a Savior. Through a God given program of healing and recovery, I allowed God to re-enter my life in a place called Shepherd’s House. The staff here is truly gifted and God sent to help you heal spiritually, mentally, and emotionally. I am truly grateful for a more blessed, productive, and serene life thanks to God, through the Shepherd’s House.

My name is Steven. Because of bad choices I was sentenced to prison. Fortunately, I got my sentence modified to be released into Shepherd’s House. During my time there I learned the skills I needed to wake up out of the ‘fog’ and make something out of myself.

It gives me Great pleasure to be able to write a few words about the shepherd’s house recovery program. To be alive and sober today is indeed a miracle and a gift from God. While living at Shepherd’s house and attending the clinical programming as well as working one on one with my pace manager, I was able to be honest with myself and the fact that I am an alcoholic who ripped like a tornado through the lives of those I said I cared about. A closeness and camaraderie with the other veterans of the Shelburne House tremendously helped me build a solid formation of sobriety.

I started drinking and using drugs about 35 years ago. It wasn’t long after meeting with drug dealers that I became one myself. At first, I was just trying to make a fast buck, but it wasn’t long before I wound up being my own best user. When they placed me at Shepherd’s house I felt the presence of God for the first time in my life. I believe The Lord placed me at Shepherd’s house so he could protect m. my life is good now, and that is only by the grace of God.
